Founded
in 1872, St. Albertus was the first Polish Roman Catholic
Church in Detroit, Michigan. It was the spiritual home to many
Polish immigrants in the late 1800s and early 1900s. Sadly, the
church was closed by the Archdiocese of Detroit in 1990. But it
still stands proudly at the corner of St. Aubin and Canfield as
an icon of Detroit's Polonia. St. Albertus has been designated
by the State of Michigan as an official "Historic Site"
and a non-profit association has been formed to see to its maintenance
and restoration. There are still Masses said monthly at the church
and tours can be arranged.
