St. Albertus was the spiritual home to thousands of Polish immigrants to Detroit in the late 1800s and well on into the 1900s. If you are doing genealogy research on Polish immigrants to Detroit during this time, you may be interested to know that there are baptismal, marriage, and death records from this parish available for public viewing on microfilm at the Burton Collection of the Detroit Public Library. The following is a list of the genealogy films available:

Burton Historical Collection Microfilm No. 1024

  • Reel 1 - Baptismal Register, Vol.1-4a (July/1872 - December/1887)
  • Reel 2 - Baptismal Register, Vol.5-7 (December/1887 - May/1896)
  • Reel 3 - Baptismal Register, Vol.8-12 (May/1896 - December/1905)
  • Reel 4 - Baptismal Register, Vol.13-14a (January/1906 - March/1914)
  • Reel 5 - Baptismal Register, Vol.15-16 (March/1914 - January/1919)
  • Reel 6 - Baptismal Register, Vol.17-20 (January/1919 - October/1938)
  • Reel 7 - Marriage Register, Vol.1-4 (July/1872 - May/1913)
  • Reel 8 - Marriage Register, Vol.5-7 (May/1913 - November/1936)
  • Reel 9 - Death Register, Vol.2-3 (January/1889 - January/1931)

If you are unable to visit the Burton Collection in person, there are professional genealogy researchers who will do your research for you for a fee. A list is available on the Burton Collection web site. If you are looking for information beyond birth, marriage, and death records, you may want to contact the Archdiocese of Detroit. There is no one available at the church itself who can help you with your genealogy research.

Special Note!

Those of you that have ancestors that were early immigrants to Detroit might want to check out some genealogy research that was done by Jan S. Zaleski, on some of the early parishioners of St. Albertus Parish. His research was published in the May 1995 issue of the Polish Genealogical Society of Michigan's journal The Eaglet and appears here with permission and in kindness. Thank you!

Death entries for St. Albertus, on the Burton Microfilms commence in 1889, although the parish was founded in 1872. The early parishioners of the parish, were without a doubt, buried in Detroit's historic Mt. Elliott Cemetery. Jim Tye has gone through the Mt. Elliott records and has created an alphabetical listing of over 5500 Poles, people buried, not only from St. Albertus, but also burials from St. Casimir, St. Francis d'Assisi, and St. Josaphat. This index covers the years 1865 through 1895. He will gladly search a few names for interested parties. You can contact Jim Tye at kurpie21@hotmail.com.

Good luck with your genealogy research and may God bless you!
