| Although
the parish of St. Albertus was closed in 1990, the church still
stands at the corner of St. Aubin and Canfield. As you can imagine,
a 100+ year old church that seats 2500 people is a big undertaking
to maintain. In 1991, one year after the parish closed, a group
of parishioners formed an association to maintain and preserve this
beautiful church... an icon of the Polish immigrants in Detroit.
That group is The Polish American Historic Site Association (PAHSA)
(a member of the Polish American Congress). The association meets
the 2nd Tuesday of each month in the rectory (next door to the church)
at about 6:30pm.

The
association collects money during the monthly Masses, but only about
30-50 people attend the regular Masses. The special Masses on Easter
and Christmas of course draw more people, but even with those contributions
the restoration progresses very slowly. In addition to the collection
basket, the association has fund raisers from time to time such
as card parties, picnics, etc. If you'd like to become a member
of The Polish American Historic Site Association, they'd
sure like to have your help... money, time, effort... whatever you
can give. The PAHSA is 501(c)(3) organization and donations are
tax deductible.
If
you have no interest in joining the association but would like to
make a donation to the restoration work you can do so by mailing
a check to:

National Trust for Historic Preservation awards Cynthia Woods grant to the Polish American Historic Site Association.
Polish American Historic Site Association, on May 28, 2008 was awarded $7500 grant by the National Trust for Historic Preservation from its Cynthia Woods Mitchell Fund for Historic Interiors. This seed money will be used for the St. Albertus Historic Site Interior Restoration Plan.
The Polish American Historic Site Association is a 501-c(3) non-profit organization established to preserve the St. Albertus Historic site. St. Albertus Church Parish was closed in 1990 and now operates as a museum of cultural history.
PAHSA is excited and believes that this money will actively ensure that the heritage and architecture of the St. Albertus National Historic Site is preserved future generations.
In 1997 the Cynthia Woods Mitchell Fund for Historic Interiors was established in honor by a generous gift from George P. Mitchell of Houston and Galveston Texas. The Cynthia Woods Mitchell Fund for Historic Interiors provides assistance in the preservation, restoration, and interpretation of historic interiors.
The National Trust for Historic Preservation distributes total grants of $50,000 annually from the Mitchell Fund. Once a year, Mitchell Fund Grants ranging from $2500 to $10,000 are awarded to nonprofit groups and public agencies. Grants must be matched at least dollar for dollar with public or private funds.
The National Trust for Historic Preservation is a nonprofit membership organization chartered by Congress to encourage public participation in all aspects of historic preservation.
